DE J.D. Waggoner chooses Iowa State

Iowa State scored its 10th commitment of the 2013 recruiting class Wednesday morning in Dallas Jesuit defensive end J.D. Waggoner.

A 6-foot-2, 230-pound defensive end, Waggoner is a returning starter for a Jesuit team that advanced to the Texas Class 5A Division II playoffs last season. Waggoner visited the Iowa State campus on Tuesday and gave his verbal commitment to head coach Paul Rhoads and the rest of the Cyclones’ staff.

“I loved Coach Rhoads. I feel like we have a great match,” said Waggoner, who was recruited by defensive ends coach Curtis Bray. “They are enthusiastic about winning a national championship. They are building brand new facilities, and they have an up-and-coming program. I know they’ll take care of me.”

Waggoner chose Iowa State over an offer from New Mexico State and interest from Tulsa, Louisiana Tech, SMU and Louisiana-Monroe. In addition to running the 40-yard dash in 4.7 seconds, Waggoner also bench presses 335 pounds and squat 445.

Waggoner became the fourth Texan in the 2013 class to commit to the Cyclones. He also is the Cyclones’ first defensive end commitment of the class.

“It’s a relief that I can enjoy my senior year,” Waggoner said. “I now know that I will play football in college. It feels good to know that.”
