SEALY, Texas -- Now that he’s lacing up the cleats and putting on his pads again, Ricky Seals-Jones is ready to refocus.
The No. 1 ranked receiver prospect from Sealy, Texas, told HornsNation he has put his recruitment on hold so he can focus on getting his senior season off to a good start.
“I’m just laying low and focusing on my high school career. That’s about it,” he said Tuesday. “[Recruiting] is on the side. I’m taking a timeout on it.”
Seals-Jones originally hoped to reach a college decision by the end of the summer. Right now, the former Texas commit is in no hurry.
After spending much of July on basketball courts playing in AAU tournaments across the country, Seals-Jones is glad Sealy’s preseason practice schedule is underway. He’s got a little rust to shake off.
“I’ve got to get used to it and get back in the football routine,” Seals-Jones said. “But it’s great being out here and being back to working on football.”
Texas, Texas A&M and LSU are still considered the favorites to land a pledge from the state of Texas’ top prospect, and Seals-Jones said Baylor and TCU are still on his radar.
Though the 6-foot-5, 230-pound wideout isn’t naming any leaders and says no school has separated from the pack, two showed more interest than the rest throughout the summer.
“Texas and Texas A&M,” he said. “I always talk to coach [Clarence] McKinney and with coach Oscar Giles and [Darrell] Wyatt. Those two are the biggest ones that I keep in touch with. I probably talk to them every day. And coach [Mack] Brown hits me up every now and then.”
Both schools have been supportive of Seals-Jones’ interest in playing both football and basketball in college, and he visited the basketball coaching staffs at each one this summer. Still, Seals-Jones insists this is far from a two-school race.
He has yet to line up any plans for taking official visits this fall, and he now has no timetable for narrowing down his options or making a final decision.
Right now, all he’s worried about is playing football.
“Whenever I decide I’m ready, I’ll make that call,” Seals-Jones said.
