Toledo (Ohio) Whitmer defensive back Mark Meyers was committed to the hometown team, but his dream was to always play in the Big Ten. When Michigan State gave him that chance, he just could not pass it up, and the three-star safety committed to the Spartans.
"It was a little tough [decommitting from Toledo], but not that hard," Meyers said. "I always wanted to play in the Big Ten, and I got that opportunity, and you got to take them."
What really sold Meyers on Michigan State was the academic support staff. He plans to study recreational therapy.
"The academic people really impressed me," Meyers said. "Whenever you need help they get you the help whenever you need it. Whenever I need help -- no matter what it takes, like a tutor -- they get it for you."
The Spartans had one of the country's best defenses last season, and Meyers can play both cornerback and safety in it. Meyers said the defense Whitmer runs is similar to the one Michigan State runs, so it should be a smooth transition.
"It's very aggressive, and I like it," Meyers said. "Definitely this year when I'm on the team we'll be highly ranked on the defensive of the ball in the Big Ten and the country.
" ... I have great ball skills, aggressive, make tackles in the open field and run to the ball and make plays."
Meyers is Michigan State's 15th commitment from a high school senior and is the Spartans' top defensive recruit in the 2012 class.
