NJIT Highlanders
2013-14 record: 13-16

The New Jersey Institute of Technology has fared better at basketball than it has at playing the game of college sports.
As Division I's lone independent program, NJIT has failed where other newcomers like Grand Canyon, Incarnate Word and UMass Lowell succeeded. In 2013-14 those programs all made their debuts (provisional and postseason-ineligible though they were) in conferences with automatic bids. Conversely, Jim Engles' men have, as yet, no sanctioned multiyear path culminating in NCAA tournament eligibility.
