Boras' presence towers over draft

No one agent has had more influence on the financial structure of Major League Baseball and its Rule 4 Draft than Scott Boras. Year after year, he lands some of the best prospects in amateur baseball, and year after year he gets them bonuses well above the slot bonus amounts recommended by MLB's commissioner's office.

His tactics have included long holdouts, including the one by Max Scherzer, who agreed to terms with the Arizona Diamondbacks just before the signing deadline last week. This year, Boras' fingerprints are all over the draft, particularly its first round, both because he has a great list of players and because MLB changed some of the draft rules to try to counter his negotiating strategies.
