Hockey analytics pioneer Rob Vollman is ESPN Insider's armchair GM this season, exploring how modern statistics can inform front-office decisions.

When it comes to crafting a successful goaltending tandem, there are some very different strategies this year. For example, Dallas is investing over $10 million in their netminding duo, while Anaheim, Buffalo and Edmonton are opting for a bargain pairing priced at under $4 million combined. Some teams, like Boston, Montreal and New York, are fortunate enough to have a goalie sufficiently elite to essentially fly without an experienced backup, while teams like Calgary are aiming for more of an even partnership. A look at the numbers can help clarify who is doing what -- and perhaps identify the best strategy.
