Springboks prop Julian Redelinghuys has had successful neck surgery and should be able to return home later this week, according to the Lions team doctor.

The 27-year-old, who plays club rugby in South Africa for the Golden Lions, faces an extended period on the sidelines after he suffered a dislocation of his neck at the C5/6 level during a collision in Saturday's Currie Cup semifinal against the Free State Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.

"Julian's operation went well on Sunday morning. He had a fusion at C5/6 level. If all goes well, he should be able to return home later this week," said Lions team doctor Rob Collins.

Redelinghuys has become a regular feature in Allister Coetzee's Springboks side in 2016, playing six Tests.
