Reports: Welker has surgery

Patriots receiver Wes Welker underwent surgery to repair torn ligaments in his left knee Tuesday at Massachusetts General Hospital, according to published reports.

According to the Boston Herald, team doctor Thomas Gill performed the surgery. The Boston Globe quoted a person with knowledge of the surgery as saying that Welker was "perfectly OK" after the surgery.

The surgery comes 30 days after Welker sustained the injury in the Patriots' regular-season finale at Houston. Welker tore both his ACL and MCL, and he previously said that the MCL had to heal before he could undergo surgery.

In his third season with New England, Welker set a franchise record with 123 catches for the season despite missing almost three complete games. He had 1,348 yards and four touchdowns and was named to the All-Pro team. Without him, the Patriots lost 33-14 to Baltimore in an AFC wild-card game.

Tom Brady recently addressed Welker's injury at a charity event, saying, "He has a tough road and he'll overcome it, I have no doubt he will."
