Sutton's automatic play-off semi-final hopes suffered a blow as their winless run was stretched to five games with a 2-1 defeat at Maidenhead.
The hosts went ahead after 24 minutes when Harry Pritchard collected the ball 25 yards out and rifled a shot into the top corner of the net.
And just eight minutes later they doubled their advantage when a deep corner found its way to Jake Goodman and he planted a header home from six yards.
Adrian Clifton had a goal ruled out for offside before the Magpies were awarded a penalty in the 76th minute when Terell Thomas brought down Sean Marks, but Jamie Butler saved Pritchard's effort.
Clifton then saw an effort come back off the crossbar with Butler beaten 10 minutes from time.
Sutton got back into the game with three minutes remaining when Craig Eastmond lashed home from 25 yards and Ross Stearn almost snatched an equaliser but saw his effort hit the post.
