Violence at Partizan Belgrade vs. Red Star derby leaves 20 injured

Partizan Belgrade and Red Star's derby match was marred with violence between supporters on Wednesday night in which 20 people were injured, one with severe head injuries.

Local police intervened to stop the fighting which, according to AFP, was between rival groups of home supporters at the Partizan stadium.

Images from the match show several people with bloodied faces being brought on to the pitch and taken away by police after the fighting, which lasted for around 10 minutes.

"There were 20 fans injured in total," A&E spokesperson Nada Macura told Serbia's Beta news agency. "A young man who was said to have been taken in for resuscitation to the Military Medical Academy has got a head injury and was left in the care of a neurosurgeon."

Reigning champions Partizan took the lead via a Seydouba Soumah penalty on the hour mark, only for visiting Red Star to level in the 84th minute through Richmond Boakye.

The result saw Red Star maintain their nine-point lead at the top of the Serbian SuperLiga. They will face Russia's CSKA Moscow in the Europa League round of 32 after finishing second to Arsenal in the group stage. Partizan will face Czech club Viktoria Plzen.
