Yanks lose in Philly 5-4; Starters are a problem; Sanchez snapping out of it

Yankees end up with a split in Philly. Jordan Montgomery only 4 innings. Gary Sanchez might be snapping out of a slump, but Gleyber Torres is not. Never too early to look ahead to the postseason, and they could have pitching matchup problems. Miguel Andujar was optioned, but he needs to play every day. We hear from Aaron Boone on Andujar, Sanchez, and the starting pitching issues.

Yanks' Boone grumbles over Phils fans' air horn

Fans aren't allowed inside Citizens Bank Park, but that didn't stop them from loudly supporting the Phillies against the Yankees the past two nights, with Yankees manager Aaron Boone questioning their use of an air horn on Thursday.

Marly Rivera ESPN Writer

Gary Sánchez said that he insisted on playing today, despite being hit by a pitch on his left elbow: “Last night I was in pain, but it was better this morning. But any time that I have my uniform on, I don't think about any pain. I have played through worse and more painful things. There is no need for me to take time off since I need to help my team.”

"It was about time that I did something. I was due to do some damage, after a lot of damage had been done to me!" -Gary Sánchez

Jordan Montgomery said that the noise didn't bother him whatsoever, 'it's no different than fans in the stands.' Montgomery also told us postgame that he discussed with some teammates yesterday that the announcers at Citizens Bank Park were apparently being very loud during the broadcast, but seemed to them like it was done only when the Yankees were on the mound. Montgomery gave no excuses for his poor performance tonight; said he had problems being aggressive.

Aaron Boone explained that he discussed the air horn outside CF at Citizens Bank Park with the umpires; complaint was timing of the horn because "in the environment we're in, it's like a golf environment..." Was told they could do nothing about it since fans are outside the ballpark.

Back-to-back 2-out hits for the Yankees in the 9th inning, down 5-4 to the Phillies.

Héctor Neris gets Aaron Judge to strike out to finish the top of the 8th. Judge, who had a rest day today, came in as a pinch-hitter with 2 outs and a man on 3B. Phillies 5-4 Yankees

The Phillie Phanatic, the outstanding Phillies' mascot, went out to CF and chatted with the fans outside the fence raising the (awesome) raucus we've been hearing since yesterday. The fans have (unfortunately) quieted down.

Ahead 1-2 vs. Phil Gosselin, Jordan Montgomery gives up a 2-run double and the Phillies retake a 3-run lead (5-2). Montgomery at 74 pitches through only 3 innings.

Jordan Montgomery gets through the second inning; already at 50 pitches. Phillies 3-2 Yankees, thanks to a J.T. Realmuto 3-run HR.
